OK, so I have now attended TWO (count 'em, two) official Lamaze classes. Last night's was better from a social aspect (at least HALF of the couples were married, as compared to only 2 of 9 couples the first night). I think the median age was around 26, whereas it was around 20 on the first night.
We labored (ha ha) over the details of (uh) labor, and how to tell whether it is real or not. "Ken, were you paying attention?" you ask. Well... the definition of true labor is (1) consistent contractions that do not go away, AND (2) a cervical change. I will not define a "cervical change" for you. If you've been through class, you know. And if you haven't, well, go to class when it's your time.
The best part of the night, by far, was when the instructor had each of us get up and massage our wives' (or girlfriends, in some cases) neck and shoulders for a minute, to simulate what we're to do during her labor. Why was that the best part? (1) we got to stand up after sitting for an hour and a half and (2) because after that massage, the instructor had us switch places and let our ladies massage us. I don't think I want to go through labor, but I would like another massage. :)
So, all in all it was a learning experience that I feel every pregnant couple should attend. It may be boring at times (2.5 hours is a LONG time to sit and listen), but the info is adequately detailed.
And bring some coffee. I got "coffee envy" last night when one guy brought an Atlanta Bread Co. cup in. He didn't even offer to share.
more to come...
